Journal Entry #3

Just like in the last entry there will be two parts. First report on my continuous journey through Unity. Then I will talk about a few tweaks I made in my design that I presented you last time. (You can check it out here. So you can compare it to the new version.) But enough introduction. Onwards!

24.03.2021 - Discovering scripts in Unity - 5 hours

Yet another batch of tutorials. This time the main topic were scripts. Because I'm not new to C# the basic didn't surprise me. The way the scripts work is pretty clear and there were no problems along the way. So why did I spend like 5 hours on this part? Because I did all the tutorials (including whole Roll-a-Ball). It's true that some of the tutorials felt really slow paced, because they were talking about things I already knew but I learned also some new Unity related things which is great. You can check my Roll-a-Ball game, which I posted here as Purple's Crazy Adventure v3. I hope the tutorials in the future will be as good as these but better paced.

27.03.2021 - Updating the level design - 1 hour

When I was making the level design last week I thought it would be nice to have some collectibles around the level. At that time I didn't know how hard it would be to implement it so I just scraped that idea. Now I know it's not that hard, so I added some gems into the game. Gems come in three rarities and you can score up to 1000 points by collecting one of them. Thats right the design now also introduces score system. You get points for picking up the gems. But it's not that easy because some of them are hidden. I also added lives, so now you can fail up to three times. There are notes about camera too. Most of the time camera should follow the player, but when there are some doors opening camera should focus them. So the player knows that new parts of the level were unlocked. The last thing that I added to the design is UI mockup. It shows how the info boxes (with score and lives) will appear on the players screen. And that's all. These changes aren't huge but I think that they improve the design a lot and makes the idea of the game clearer. Next week will be in the name of design so I expect that big changes are on the horizon. (Or maybe not. It depends on state of my mind. Because without creative ideas you can't do anything. :P) Oh, I almost forgot! You can check the new design here.

And that's it. Nothing more for today. Hope you had fun reading this. :)
