Journal Entry #1
First entry for this project and it's already late one (I was supposed to deliver this previous week.). That's not good. But I hope the game that this project will turn into will be.
04.05.2021 + 05.05.2021 - Creating the game design - 4,5 hours
For this entry we were supposed to deliver one page design for the game which we will later implement. Minimum investment was 4 hours. From the start I thinked that it's too low. Because you have to thought about some ideas first and then get them on paper. Now that you checked again my time investment you think that I either somehow managed to do it super quickly or there is some "twist" to it. Well the latter is true. Because it's already Wednesday and I wanted to share with you at least something (so that it does not seem that I'm just doing nothing) I just spent the bare minimum of hours on this task and now I'm presenting it to you. The complete design will be presented in the second entry later this week. Alright now to the design itself.
Since I'm new to Unity making game from scratch seemed like a pretty scary option. Using the 2D Game Kit it is then. Which sounds like yet another platformer. Oh, but we must give it a twist. Hmm... What about game like Animal Crossing where you just hop around and talk to villagers. That's it! What a nice idea! Do you think that I twisted it too much? Well maybe but I think it's pretty fresh idea. You can just build the 2D environment with the kit but without platforms. Just simple colorful world where you can chill after the long day at work. Not a platformer where you need to precisely land on the platform and if you fail you have urge to thow controller (or keyboard) out of the window and rip the last bits of your hair from the head. So let me show you some scatches of the beatiful world of... umm... well... I don't have the name just yet... The beatiful world of Project C!
First of all the main level of our game, Town. There are few houses, town hall and some stores. Here you will meet the vast majority of the villagers. Then there are multiple side levels featuring different places. World contains:
I will not talk about them in detail since that is something that will be included into the design itself. Here I just want to say that the work on these levels was pretty fun and in the end I'm really happy with the result. But to give you at least some idea. Here is a little summary of how does this design map to the requirements:
Goal of the game
- Complete the villagers tasks (if you want) and enjoy the world.
Design at least 2 levels
- Two levels for this type of game would be too few. Instead I have multiple smaller and simpler levels.
New game mechanics (at least 4)
- Inventory
- You will be gathering a lot of resources in order to complete villagers tasks so you need a place to store them.
- Day-night cycle
- This game is like your new virtual life so it is quite natural that there should be some sense of time.
- Saving
- Naturally this is not the game that you will be playing just in a one session (unless it's bad). Thus some way to save your progress would be nice.
- Weather
- Rain, wind and maybe something else.
- Fishing + gold panning minigame
- Nothing fancy here. Just some press the button at the right time. Which can still be tricky sometimes. ;)
If you are wondering where will I get the art for this game there is a simple answer for it. Internet. If you can get guns and drugs on it there should be some fine art too. :D
That's the brief introduction of this upcoming game. I hope you are as excited about this as I'm. See you later this week with (hopefully) complete design.
